Diving with Sharks - Discover Faial - Island of Nature & Culture

An extraordinary adventure at sea

A dream for some, a source of panic for others. One thing is for sure: diving with sharks is an adventure you will never forget.

At Condor Bank, just 10 miles off the coast of Faial, you can dive among blue sharks (Prionace glauca), one of the fastest fish in the ocean. This species has a curious habit of approaching divers and swimming around them slowly – a truly thrilling experience.

The shark diving season usually runs from July to September, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world who come here to enjoy one of the few places in the world where it is possible to dive with these extraordinary predators.

The diving is done at shallow depths (up to about 10m), but it is also possible to snorkel at the surface. On days of higher currents or to support less experienced divers, safety cables are attached to the boat, ensuring that the experience is conducted with a high degree of safety.

Safety above all: For this activity it is necessary to present a diver’s certificate, number of logged dives, and a medical certificate. Some companies may also require a coastal check-dive to verify the diver’s experience and comfort in the water.

Important: We recommend that you book in advance and keep your schedule flexible, given that it is totally dependent on weather conditions and a minimum number of divers are required.
