Diving | Snorkeling with Devil Rays
One of the most unforgettable dives among these majestic creatures
Diving with devil rays (Mobula tarapacana) is rated as the best diving experience in the Azores! This is a unique experience that is possible to do by diving, if you are an experienced diver, or snorkeling, which requires no certification.
Devil rays are majestic, harmless animals that do not fear man and swim calmly near the surface, at a few meters depth. On calm days they can be seen from the boat itself.
The diving takes place on an underwater bank called “Princess Alice”, about 45 nautical miles southwest of Faial.
Devil rays tend to concentrate on this famous seamount, which emerges from depths of almost 1000 meters, forming a platform at the summit only 30/40 meters from the sea surface. It is common to see these extraordinary creatures individually or in small groups, but they can sometimes swarm in groups of dozens of animals, providing a fascinating spectacle of movement, elegance, and emotion.
Besides devil rays, it is common to find schools of other pelagic species
in this area such as the skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowmouth barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis), and almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana).
These trips are available from July to September. With the boat trip lasting approximately 3 hours each way, this is an all-day activity.
Safety above all:
– The trips are undertaken only when the weather and sea conditions are suitable. If you are interested, we recommend that you have several days available and a flexible schedule.
– Divers are required to have a diver’s certificate, medical certificate, and the number of dives registered. A check-dive may also be required to verify the diver’s experience and comfort in the water.
– As the area is prone to strong sea currents, safety cables are attached to the boat, thus ensuring the safety of the divers and snorkelers.
