Faial is getting ready to welcome another edition of MUMA – Murmúrios da Maré, a festival organized by Associação Música Vadia, which once again energizes the island’s cultural scene on 14 and 15 November, at the Old Volunteer Firefighters’ Headquarters in Horta. The event continues to establish itself as a space for encounter, experimentation and celebration of contemporary music produced in the Azores and beyond.

The programme begins on 14 November, at 9:30 p.m., with the fourth chapter of “Murmurinho – Who Was It That Blew?”, a project that explores soundscapes and narratives in a performative format.

The second day, 15 November, brings the festival’s most vibrant moment, with performances that promise to turn the old fire station into a hub of musical effervescence. The night starts at 10:30 p.m. with Xexa, followed by Fidju Kitxora at midnight. The party continues with a B2B DJ set by Tocha Dábaile & Raiospartam, keeping the energy high until late.

MUMA maintains a strong community identity, combining artistic creativity with the involvement of local partners and the support of regional entities. The 2025 edition strengthens the festival’s role as a cultural catalyst on Faial, highlighting emerging artistic production and collaboration within the island.

Tickets for both nights are available at the ticket office of the Horta Municipal Market. When purchased before the day of the event, prices are €5 for the first night, €8 for the second, or €10 for a full festival pass. On the event days, tickets will be sold at the door with an additional €2 charge. Young people up to 18 years old have free entry to the Murmurinho performance and benefit from a 50 percent discount on tickets for 15 November.

The public is invited to take part, discover new sounds and enjoy two immersive days dedicated to music and contemporary creation. Entry is free for the Murmurinho event, in line with the ticket policy above.

Day 1 – August 16 | Psychobloc Climbing at Ponta Furada

The first day is dedicated to psychobloc, a style of climbing without ropes performed on seaside cliffs. The picturesque Ponta Furada will be the stage for this unique experience, combining physical challenge and natural beauty.

Climbing registrations are sold out, but everyone is welcome to watch and experience the energy of the event.
You can bring your surfboard, float, or kayak to get closer to the action and see the climbers up close.

For those without equipment or who prefer an organized activity, there will be guided kayak and SUP tours with Azores4fun. The route runs from Porto da Feteira to Ponta Furada, passing impressive volcanic arches, and ends with the opportunity to watch the climbers and even take a swim .

Day 2 – August 17 | International Climbing Film Festival – Reel Rock 19

On the second day, the meeting changes setting and invites the public to dive into the world of climbing through the big screen. In partnership with Freguesia da Matriz and the Cineclube do Faial, a selection of films from Reel Rock 19, an international festival showcasing inspiring stories of climbers and extreme adventures, will be screened outdoors at Marina da Horta.

This edition features three short films that take the audience from iconic cliffs to remote big walls, showcasing perseverance, technique, and passion for the sport.

Faial’s Christmas tradition, Dia das Montras (Shop Windows Day), brings Christmas decoration enthusiasts together in the city of Horta on Sunday evening, 8th December.

Part of the Faial, Ilha Natal (“Faial, Christmas Island”) programme, Dia das Montras is one of the most eagerly awaited events for Faial locals. It marks the arrival of the Christmas spirit in the shop windows of Horta’s city centre, inviting the public to vote for the display that best showcases creativity and originality within the festive theme.

The day’s programme also features a Christmas Local Craft Market, a Film Screening, the Opening of the Traditional Nativity Scene Exhibition, a performance by a Christmas Folk Group (Rancho de Natal), a jazz concert by the local band “Blue Combo,” and other attractions.

It is also the perfect opportunity to explore local gastronomy by visiting the stalls at the Horta Municipal Market and various street vendors.

O conteúdo Faial: Discovering the History, Thinking About the Future from November 7th to November 24th aparece primeiro em Discover Faial - Island of Nature & Culture.

Artists Domingos Loureiro and Antonio Regis da Silva developed authorial investigations based on the experience of the territory, which were placed in dialogue in this exhibition entitled “Black and Blue – Matter of Infinity”, with more than 30 art pieces. 

What is this place in the middle of the Atlantic between Europe and America? What natural and human forces act and shape the territory? Who inhabits it and who crosses it? Which marks last and which marks fade? These are some of the questions that Domingos Loureiro and Regis da Silva asked during two artistic residencies that they held in Faial Island, between February and April of this year. 

“Black and Blue – Matter of Infinity” includes a video installation and several works of lithography, painting and drawing, proposing itself as an “object of contemplation and learning”, but also “as a transnational look at the physical and cultural territory of the Azores and, in particular, of Faial Island”. For the lithographic images present in the exhibition, were used pigments extracted from the volcanic stones of Faial.

According to the artists, the experience of the Azores “fostered discourses and praxis” where black and blue “are both visual and symbolic elements, where language and image complement each other, evaluating concepts such as archipelago, periphery, diaspora, frontier, nature, power, gesture, tension, freedom, visible and invisible”. 

Produced by Faial Island Sustainable Tourism Association, this exhibition closes the cycle “Memories of Powder: stone and the territory as matter”, which included three artistic residencies, exhibitions, workshops, lectures and a round table, and featured the production support of AvistaVulcão and the Microgaleria Camarupa, the Horta Museum, the Municipality of Horta, the Science and Technology Foundation and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.  

The exhibition is open to the public, at Casa Manuel de Arriaga (museum), in Horta, until June 25th 2023.
