Blue Combo Sextet at the Horta Museum

As part of the music month celebrations, the Blue Combo group will perform on 27th October at 6:00 pm at the Jesuit College building of the Horta Museum. The sextet features saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, double bass, clarinet, percussion, and piano.

The concert will include pieces like Jazz Potpourri, Caravan, and Tequila, along with a variety of works from Frank Sinatra, Eric Clapton, and others.

Entry is free.

The group members include Ana Maria Rosa, Helder Azevedo, André Silva, Cláudio Cruz, Hildeberto Peixoto, and Nuno Mendes.

]]> On October 1st, the iconic Teatro Faialense will come alive to celebrate World Music Day.

This concert, starting at 21:00, will bring together local musicians and groups for an evening that highlights the rich musical talent of the island of Faial.

The event, organised in partnership with the Câmara Municipal da Horta, Maria do Céu Brito, and Tomás Melo, promises to pay tribute to the musical traditions and innovations of Faial, featuring performances that range from Fado and choral music to genres like Pop, Mornas, and Country.

On this night, each melody will tell a musical story, interpreted by artists such as Horácio Gomes, Les Greenhill, Salome Flores, Isabelle Plante, António Pimentel, Isaac Silveira, Rute Duarte, and the Grupo Coral da Horta, accompanied by Andrei Zinovyev and many other talents that reflect the essence of Faial’s culture.

Tickets are free and can be collected at the Horta Municipal Market Information Desk, with each person allowed to reserve up to two seats.

]]> Imagine walking along a trail with a music that captures the essence of the surrounding landscape.

This is the concept behind Terra Incógnita, a transdisciplinary artistic project coming to Faial from 4th to 7th September 2024. Originally from the island of São Miguel, the project challenges artists from various disciplines to reimagine the landscape through music and performance. In 2024, it will take place from September 4th to 14th on the islands of Santa Maria and Faial.

At the heart of the programme is the idea of the trail and the contemplation of site-specific musical creations, multimedia installations, and performative acts. In the days leading up to the event, a series of talks will provide context to the exchange fostered by the artistic residencies.

Participation is free and open to all, but spaces are limited and require registration. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this unique event that promises to redefine the relationship between nature and art on the island of Faial.

]]> The Whale Factory is turning 82, and the celebrations on the 13th of September are set to liven up Porto Pim.

Festivities kick off with whaleboat tours around Porto Pim Bay, in partnership with the Horta Yatch Club. The celebrations continue with guided tours to the Monte da Guia whale’s lookout spot, followed by entertainment in the factory’s outdoor area. There will be traditional Azorean games, a lively evening of music with a Jam Session, and performances by local DJs. And of course, no birthday party would be complete without plenty of food and drinks!

The Porto Pim Whale Factory is a museum that’s open to the public, offering guided tours organised by OMA (Azores Sea Observatory). Located within the original industrial complex, it offers an immersive look at the history of the now-extinct Azorean whaling industry, which is key to understanding the historical, economic, and social context of this activity and Faial Island.

]]> The last days of August come alive with the Festas do Varadouro.

This annual event celebrates local culture and brings the community together for days of festivities by the sea. From 28 August to 1 September, the picturesque area of Varadouro, in the parish of Capelo, becomes the stage for a programme featuring tribute concerts, traditional music and dance performances, nautical competitions, and local DJ acts.

Organised by the Capelo Parish Council, this event offers a unique opportunity to experience Faial’s hospitality, savour traditional dishes, and immerse yourself in an authentic festive atmosphere.

The Festas do Varadouro have a strong religious component, reflected in the celebrations in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes. During the event, the community participates in solemn masses and processions. This religious aspect, deeply rooted in local traditions, complements the festive atmosphere, offering participants an experience that combines faith, culture, gastronomy, and tradition.

In addition to the festivities, the natural pools of Varadouro, open to the public year-round, provide a perfect setting to balance moments of tranquillity with the festive spirit.

This summer, Faial Island once again becomes the stage for a series of cultural events that promise to fill the warm nights with music and tradition. The CCD Fest 2024 – Summer Nights by the INATEL Foundation is an unmissable celebration, bringing a diverse programme of performances to Largo do Infante every Thursday, from 2nd July to 19th September.

This festival is part of a series of similar events organised by the INATEL Foundation in different locations, including other islands in the Azores and even mainland Portugal.

With free admission, this event has already become one of the main attractions of the summer in Faial, offering unforgettable moments for both locals and tourists. Don’t miss the chance to experience Azorean culture in an authentic and engaging way, and let yourself be swept away by the joy and warmth of the summer nights on Faial Island.

The performances take place every Thursday, between 2nd July and 19th September 2024. They begin at 9:30 pm, with some special events starting at 10:00 pm. Admission is free, making this festival accessible to everyone. Arrive early to secure your spot.

]]> Muma – Música em Maio – returns in 2021, after a year stopped due to the pandemic, with a new format to respond to the requirements and recommendations of the Regional Health Department. The music festival that took place annually, in May, in Faial Island, will hold a concert program between September 2021 and May 2022.

The first moment will take place on September 4th with two very special concerts in the open-air amphitheater of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores: B Fachada and MONDAY.
