The Azores archipelago hosts another edition of the Triangle Adventure by Azores Trail Run, an event that challenges athletes to cross three of its most iconic islands: Pico, São Jorge, and Faial. Over three days, participants face demanding trails, from mountains and volcanic craters to cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Highlights of the Route

Day 1 – Pico Island
25 km · 1,400 D+ · 5h limit
The adventure kicks off on the majestic Pico Island, with trails winding through lava fields and centuries-old vineyards, offering stunning views of Portugal’s highest mountain.

Day 2 – São Jorge Island
New route in preparation
The second stage takes place on São Jorge, famous for its fajãs and coastal trails. This year, the organizers have prepared a renewed route that promises an even greater challenge for participants.

Day 3 – Faial Island
34.9 km · 1,454 D+ · 7h limit
The final day leads runners through Faial, passing volcanic craters and viewpoints with breathtaking views over the Atlantic, delivering an epic conclusion to the adventure.

Scheduled for May 2–4, the race will traverse stunning trails across Faial’s Natural Park, including the Caldeira, Capelinhos, and breathtaking coastal paths that showcase the island’s raw and wild beauty. With distances ranging from 10 km to 118 km, Ultra Blue Island once again bets on a wide variety of courses to attract both elite athletes and amateur runners.

The 2024 edition had already broken participation records, with athletes from over 15 nationalities. The Azores Triangle Adventure, organised by Azores Trail Run, will take place on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of October 2024. Over the course of three days, athletes from around the world will cover 87 km through the most iconic landscapes of the three Triangle Islands: Faial, Pico, and São Jorge.

The island of Faial will host the event’s third and final stage, the Volcanoes Trail. On the 27th of October, the 33 km route will start and finish at the Capelinhos Volcano, traversing the Ten Volcanoes Trail, crossing the bridges and tunnels of the “Levada”, and passing by the Caldeira do Faial.

This challenging race is a qualifier for the Ultra-Trail® du Mont-Blanc (UTMB).

And this was not the only award won by the region in 2021, which had already been elected a Platinum “Quality Coast” destination, an international award that distinguishes coastal environmental quality for sustainable tourism. In the criteria defined by Green Destinations, the Azores achieved a level of compliance of 97.8% of the sustainability indicators: Destination Management; Nature and Landscape; Environment and Climate; Culture and Tradition; Social Welfare; Business and Hospitality.

Throughout the year, athletes will compete in the qualifying races of the different GTNS in SPAIN / PORTUGAL, FRANCE / BELGIUM, ITALY, CZE / SK / POL, UK, USA-CANADA, GERMANY / AUSTRIA / SWITZERLAND, NORDIC COUNTRIES, MEXICO to participate in this GTNS Grand Final.

This final will be part of Triangle Adventure, a Trail Running event that takes place in the 3 Islands of the Azorean Triangle annually organized by Azores Trail Run®.

It is worth remembering that in 2020 Salomon chose Ilha do Faial to host the Golden Trail Championship and that, in 2019, it went to 4 Azores Islands, including Faial, for its annual Trail Camp, always with the support of the Azores organization Trail Run® which is headquartered in Faial Island and organizes Trail Running events in several islands of the archipelago
