Faial’s Christmas tradition, Dia das Montras (Shop Windows Day), brings Christmas decoration enthusiasts together in the city of Horta on Sunday evening, 8th December.

Part of the Faial, Ilha Natal (“Faial, Christmas Island”) programme, Dia das Montras is one of the most eagerly awaited events for Faial locals. It marks the arrival of the Christmas spirit in the shop windows of Horta’s city centre, inviting the public to vote for the display that best showcases creativity and originality within the festive theme.

The day’s programme also features a Christmas Local Craft Market, a Film Screening, the Opening of the Traditional Nativity Scene Exhibition, a performance by a Christmas Folk Group (Rancho de Natal), a jazz concert by the local band “Blue Combo,” and other attractions.

It is also the perfect opportunity to explore local gastronomy by visiting the stalls at the Horta Municipal Market and various street vendors.

This concert, starting at 21:00, will bring together local musicians and groups for an evening that highlights the rich musical talent of the island of Faial.

The event, organised in partnership with the Câmara Municipal da Horta, Maria do Céu Brito, and Tomás Melo, promises to pay tribute to the musical traditions and innovations of Faial, featuring performances that range from Fado and choral music to genres like Pop, Mornas, and Country.

On this night, each melody will tell a musical story, interpreted by artists such as Horácio Gomes, Les Greenhill, Salome Flores, Isabelle Plante, António Pimentel, Isaac Silveira, Rute Duarte, and the Grupo Coral da Horta, accompanied by Andrei Zinovyev and many other talents that reflect the essence of Faial’s culture.

Tickets are free and can be collected at the Horta Municipal Market Information Desk, with each person allowed to reserve up to two seats.

Festivities kick off with whaleboat tours around Porto Pim Bay, in partnership with the Horta Yatch Club. The celebrations continue with guided tours to the Monte da Guia whale’s lookout spot, followed by entertainment in the factory’s outdoor area. There will be traditional Azorean games, a lively evening of music with a Jam Session, and performances by local DJs. And of course, no birthday party would be complete without plenty of food and drinks!

The Porto Pim Whale Factory is a museum that’s open to the public, offering guided tours organised by OMA (Azores Sea Observatory). Located within the original industrial complex, it offers an immersive look at the history of the now-extinct Azorean whaling industry, which is key to understanding the historical, economic, and social context of this activity and Faial Island.

This annual event celebrates local culture and brings the community together for days of festivities by the sea. From 28 August to 1 September, the picturesque area of Varadouro, in the parish of Capelo, becomes the stage for a programme featuring tribute concerts, traditional music and dance performances, nautical competitions, and local DJ acts.

Organised by the Capelo Parish Council, this event offers a unique opportunity to experience Faial’s hospitality, savour traditional dishes, and immerse yourself in an authentic festive atmosphere.

The Festas do Varadouro have a strong religious component, reflected in the celebrations in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes. During the event, the community participates in solemn masses and processions. This religious aspect, deeply rooted in local traditions, complements the festive atmosphere, offering participants an experience that combines faith, culture, gastronomy, and tradition.

In addition to the festivities, the natural pools of Varadouro, open to the public year-round, provide a perfect setting to balance moments of tranquillity with the festive spirit.

This summer, Faial Island once again becomes the stage for a series of cultural events that promise to fill the warm nights with music and tradition. The CCD Fest 2024 – Summer Nights by the INATEL Foundation is an unmissable celebration, bringing a diverse programme of performances to Largo do Infante every Thursday, from 2nd July to 19th September.

This festival is part of a series of similar events organised by the INATEL Foundation in different locations, including other islands in the Azores and even mainland Portugal.

With free admission, this event has already become one of the main attractions of the summer in Faial, offering unforgettable moments for both locals and tourists.
