On <\/span>September 27<\/b>, the island of <\/span>Faial<\/b> will celebrate <\/span>World Tourism Day<\/b> with two unique experiences promoted by the <\/span>Faial Sustainable Tourism Association (ATSF)<\/b> within the framework of the <\/span>European ecoRoute project<\/b>, dedicated to the discovery of the Azores\u2019 underwater cultural and natural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The program includes a <\/span>dive at the Archaeological Cannon Deposit<\/b> at 10:00 a.m. and a <\/span>guided snorkel tour of the Main shipwreck<\/b> at 2:00 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Archaeological Cannon Deposit<\/b> is the first underwater archaeological reserve in the Azores, created between 2008 and 2012. Located in the Bay of Entre-os-Montes at a depth of 18 meters, it is a true <\/span>underwater sculpture garden<\/b>, featuring artillery pieces dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. This site was designed to allow underwater cultural heritage to be <\/span>known, protected, and experienced <\/b>in situ<\/i><\/b>, combining the preservation of historical memory with new forms of tourist enjoyment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Main shipwreck<\/b>, grounded in 1892 in Porto Pim Bay, is today one of Faial\u2019s most accessible and emblematic underwater sites. Built in 1868, the vessel met its end after a fire on board and still lies in front of the old whaling factory, now home to the<\/span> Porto Pim<\/i><\/b> Aquarium<\/b>. Resting at just 4 to 5 meters deep, it is an easily accessible wreck, ideal for beginner divers or snorkelers, and an important historical witness to 19th-century Atlantic trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

These initiatives are organized in partnership with <\/span>NOVA University Lisbon\/CHAM<\/b> and <\/span>Norberto Diver<\/b>, within the framework of the <\/span>ecoRoute European project<\/b>, which aims to foster sustainable tourism and promote the value of underwater and coastal heritage in the partner regions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond Faial, ecoRoute partners in <\/span>Madeira (CEAM)<\/b> and <\/span>Martinique (APAA)<\/b> will also promote <\/span>coastal and underwater clean-up activities<\/b> and <\/span>community awareness initiatives<\/b>. This collaboration between partners reinforces a <\/span>coordinated commitment to sustainability, marine heritage protection, and community engagement<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
